Chili: Trekking information Parque Nacional Puyehue, Baños El Caulle Thursday 15 February @ 15:47:51 GMT+1 door bas (2939 maal gelezen) | We went trekking around Volcan Puyehue. First day to campsite Perdida, the second day to refugio El Caulle and climbing Volcan Puyehue and the third day to Baños de Caulle and Los Geisers. Most people go back to the refugio but we did the alternative finish, Ruta Los Americanos. We used the map they sell at the restaurant and the LP Trekking in the Patagonian Andes. The trek is quite clear in the first part (refugio El Caulle, volcan Puyehue, Baños de Caulle and Los Geisers) but the second part is not well marked and the LP does not give a lot of information. Here is some information so you won't have to look and search and backtrack as much as we did.

Bolivia: How to get into the San Pedro jail in La Paz Tuesday 19 September @ 23:01:18 GMT+1 door eelco (1797 maal gelezen) | YES!!! It is still posible to get into the famous San Pedro jail in La Paz. Previously, you could get a tour, but that's over now. Now you have to do a little more work, but it's worth it. But... be quick, because rumours go that the government first wants to get rid of the foreigners in the jail and second, transfer the building into a hospital. And all what's left then is the famous book Marching Powder, to give you an idea how it's like inside. Click on the picture for more information....

The first tip is go in every town to the tourist information and get the yellow leaflet and look for the typical food, aks for restaurants who have those typical dishes on the menu. But also hostel tips and more general information can be found in this article. The tips will be generally from North to South, we way most people travel.

Ecuador: Cuenca and Quilota loop tips Tuesday 19 September @ 21:49:13 GMT+1 door bas (778 maal gelezen) | Lovely hostels in Cuenca and Quilotoa Loop In Cuenca we met Luis at the busstation where he was promoting his hostel. He explaned how to get there by bus. It's not so easy to find because there is no sign of a hostel, only a brown door with a sun painted above the door. Luckely for us, his wife Maria Elena was waiting for us. It's a lovely family run hostel where you can use the kitchen. It has a bit soft beds but the big breakfast and friendliness make this a great option for 5 USD. Casa Sol, Estévez de Toral 10-33 y Gran Colombia, Tel 07 2822507. We wanted to do the Quilotoa Loop but the Lonely Planet gave only one option in Chuchilán, the Black Sheep. We are happy to inform you that right now there are more and more affordable hostels, like the Mama Hilda Hostel or the Eco Hostel.

Peru: Machu Picchu on a budget Wednesday 23 August @ 02:27:27 GMT+1 door bas (2979 maal gelezen) | Machu Picchu is one of the highlights of Peru and one of the most expensive. If you look in guidebooks and go to the tourist office in Cuzco they will tell you that there are only two ways of getting to Machu Piccu, by train, the cheapest option 44 USD return, or hiking the Inca trail or other hikes offered by the tour agencies, which all are very expensive.
By looking on the thorntree of LP we found another way, taking busses to Santa Maria, Santa Teresa and Hidroelectrico and walking the last 10 km to Aguas Calientes. This will cost about 8 USD. And because we didn't wanted to return the way we came we walked from Aguas Calientes to Km 82 for free. from there you can take a bus (1 SOL = 33 USDcent) to Ollantaytambo or decide to walk the last kilometers. This trip took us 5 days and we managed our daybudget of 36 USD for 2 persons, including the entrance ticket Machu Picchu (which is now 118 Soles pp).

Ecuador: Galápagos on a 'budget' (2006) Saturday 27 May @ 19:07:11 GMT+1 door bas (6614 maal gelezen) | Galápagos is a great experience but also an expensive one. If you start orientating, you soon discover the prices of cruises start around 1000 USD for a 8 day tour. Not a real budget option for many people. And because most people think that a cruise is the only option to "do" the Galapagos, they skip it entirely. But... you CAN do it on your own, there are budget accomodations, there are boats between the islands, and without doing the more-day-tours you cán see a lot. Because most people don't know that we wrote this article.
We had a lot of discussions on the thorntree discusion forum, people thought we had the opinion that doing it "our" way was better. But, we do NOT want to say that, we don't want to say that doing a tour is a waste of your money. But ... not all people want or can afford these tours. We enjoyed our way very much, very relaxed and we saw a lot. But ofcourse, by cruise you get to places you can not go on your own. But on the other hand, we've been to places where the cruise-people don't go. So, maybe the best way is, to do both ways, by cruise AND on your own.

Panama: Darién on a budget Wednesday 18 January @ 14:51:30 GMT+1 door bas (1135 maal gelezen) | After our trip through La Moskitia we decided that we also wanted to go to Darién. It´s a remote area with a lot of jungle and not a lot of tourist go there. We read in the guidebooks that transportation was expensive but with our experience of La Moskitia we knew it should also be possible with a small budget if you have time. We stayed in our budget of 18 USD (15 EUR) per person per day. We went to Meteti, Yaviza, El Real, Rancho Frio (National Park Darién) and La Palma. In this article you find the information we gathered from own experience, different guidebooks (LP, Rough Guide, Footprint, Let´s go) and some anonymous traveller who left his Darien info at Mamallena hostel. Are you just interested pictures see our Darién fotoalbum

Panama: Panama City tips: Hostel, Internet and cheap food Wednesday 04 January @ 20:56:38 GMT+1 door eelco (808 maal gelezen) | In this article with Panama City Tips, we'll give you info about a very nice hostel, a superfast and cheap internet place, and cheap, filling and traditional Panamanian food "Mamallena".
Mamallena Backpackers Mamallena is not only the name of food, it's also the name of a new hostel in Panama City. Started by a Belgium guy Xavier and his Panamanian girlfriend Isabel. As always with our tips, it's not mentioned in the guidebooks, but ABSOLUTELY worth going. It's clean, spacey, has good beds, includes breakfast and internet, located in a nice, safe area with shops etc. and just has a very nice atmosphere. Especially that atmosphere makes people come back. Right now they have 2 dorms with airco, a kitchen, a big terrace, and livingroom with cable tv. To find it, look in the guidebooks for the Voyager, Mamallena is located right next to it. See also their Mamallena website, or our fotoalbum of Mamallena pictures. Click on the picture for the other 2 tips. If you look for our pictures of Panama click here.
